Lady Gaga won the prize for the best female act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2011 held in Belfast on Sunday night.

As one of her costumes Gaga wore a silver dress with an oversized tilted hat which covered her face completely.

“Thank you so much, I love you so much. I'm so grateful. I'm really smiling right now, but I know you can't tell,” she said.

Runners up for the best female act were Jennifer Lopez, Adele, Katy Perry and Beyonce.

Katy Perry won the best live act award and American band Thirty Seconds to Mars won best alternative act.

Lady Gaga received a total of six nominations. British singer Adele was nominated for best female act, best video and best song for her hit song “Rolling in the Deep.”

It is the first time the MTV awards have been held in Belfast.

"It is great that Northern Ireland is getting an international spotlight thrown at it in such a positive way," said Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, according to BBC News.

He went on to say that the event is an “incredible opportunity for people to think about the music in Northern Ireland.”
