A mysterious crop circle was discovered in a Salinas, Calif. field and has raised questions not of extra-terrestrial life, but as to the identity of those who humans who made it.
"We were on a photo flight this morning and came across it," Julie Belanger, of the 111th Aerial Photography Squadron, told NBC News on Monday. "It was so unique in the middle of a field."
Belanger said she had not heard about the circle and flew over the farm by coincidence.
"It was beautiful. Quite beautiful," Belanger told KSBW. "I believe it's possible that aliens exist, but I don't know if they would bother making a crop circle to give us a message."
The landowner, whose field was used for this acre-wide circle, had to hire security guards as the site has drawn outside attention, according to the Monterey Herald.
So far no one has claimed responsibility.
Coincidentally the crop circle was the subject of a 2-minute YouTube video posted Monday under the name Cannot Say.
In the video two unidentified men reveal they saw green flashing lights in a field while driving along Chualar Canyon Road, south of Salinas. They exit the vehicle and enter the field.
"Dude," says one, "Are you seeing this?"
Viewers of the video were unconvinced that aliens had anything to do with the circular creation.
"So stupid," wrote one poster. "The guys that made this video are the ones that made the circle."
Jeffrey Wilson of the Independent Crop Circle Researchers Association also told The Monterey Herald that there were several signs that the circles were made by human rather than extra-terrestrial life.
"My guess is that ... it is commissioned work for an advertisement," Wilson explained to the Herald. "Or a commissioned work for a production company making a documentary on crop circles or for some kind of film."
