Namibia Broadcaster Reinstates Radio Devotions

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has announced that it will reinstate morning and evening devotions and religious songs on its radio services

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has announced that it will reinstate morning and evening devotions and religious songs on its radio services, news agencies reported Tuesday. The decision came after a meeting on Jan. 12 between the NBC and the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN), which represents 19 churches.

According to the Namibian news agency, a statement released by the NBC Tuesday said the meeting held with the CCN "critically reviewed the manner in which religious programmes were conducted on both radio and television".

Less than a week ago, the corporation suspended religious programming from television and radio. NBC director general Gerry Munyama said the suspension was linked to the proliferation of non-traditional churches in Namibia, saying that the situation is getting out of hand and that "religion is getting out of the traditional way we know it".

The CCN and NBC decided to hold further meetings on guidelines to regulate religious program.

Moderator of the popular Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) in Namibia Rev Schalk Pienaar, said there is "a need to look at the contents of that which is put on air," but added that he questioned the need to suspend all religious programs to create the opportunity for such a meeting.
