'Nashville' Season 4 Episode 17 Recap: Avery and Layla Hook Up; Is It the End of 'Javery'?

"Nashville" season four episode 17, entitled "Baby Come Home," aired Wednesday. This is something a lot of the show's fans had been waiting for in order to learn whether Juliette and Avery would pick up the pieces of their life---and love---and rebuild it together with their daughter, Cadence. Unfortunately, all these hopes may have flown out of the window, as the last airing made it clear that Avery is not ready to go down that path as yet, not with so many trust issues still flying in the air, issues too deep and so hurting that a mere "I'm sorry" or a hug will not fix. And with Layla having shared a kiss with Avery and moving into the picture, Avery is only becoming more confused. Meantime, Juliette bared it all by visiting Avery and admitting to him that she still loves him very much.

"If we work together, we could rebuild what we had," Juliette begged Avery.

Professionally, Juliette begins to taste success once again and may spark Layla's jealousy all the more, after the former's attempts to win Avery back. In an interview with TV Line, Jonathan Jackson, who plays Avery on the show, shared a little bit about what his character is feeling with the existing love triangle and his real feelings for Juliette.

"Well, I'm sure [the show's producers] wouldn't want me to speak on the rest of the season, but that's certainly the current dynamic with them. I don't think he's ever loved anyone as much as he loved her, so even though they're not together at the moment, Avery deeply loves her. It's just one of those things that no matter what happens, when they're in the room together, they both feel that connection and it's a really painful thing, but there are a lot of deep trust issues there. So he's trying to get his life back together and move on, and yet he's still constantly feeling that tension and that pull towards her."

As to Layla, Jackson dared not reveal anything too big, but did say that Avery and Layla are presently connecting. After sharing the same sort of experiences, like losing someone, they can connect on the same ground. He also dropped that she may have some vengeful motives for pursuing Avery, but at the same time there's something genuine about her that Avery cannot help but respond to.

Whether Avery ends up with Juliette or Layla is something only time will tell. But right now, the two just have to find out for themselves, eventually.
