National Peanut Butter Day Celebrated Today

Thursday has arrived with National Peanut Butter Day and people everywhere are celebrating their favorite spread.

Whether it's the smooth or the crunchy variety, peanut butter remains one of the most popular items in America. Every year on January 24, peanut butter fans salute the popular peanut-derived sandwich filler.

George Washington Carter is largely credited for creating peanut butter in the United States. The famed spread is comprised of 90 percent or more of peanuts, and can be found in 89 percent of households in the U.S, according to Seriouseats.com.

Furthermore, the average child will eat 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before he or she graduates from high school.

Aside from the broadly popular peanut butter and jelly sandwich, there are many different recipes offering uses for the creamy spread. Examples include cakes, brownies, porridge, pancakes, and Elvis Presley's famous favorite - peanut butter and banana sandwich with bacon.

While peanut butter has a high level of monounsaturated fat and is a great source of protein, vitamins B3 and E, and antioxidants, the spread has been banned in many schools because of dangerous reactions from some people suffering with peanut allergies. Reactions include anaphylactic shock, which can result in death.

Among the countless dishes that call for it, the oils found in peanut butter are known to remove chewing gum from hair.

On National Peanut Butter Day Thursday, Twitter users took to the micro blogging site with their celebrations.

"In honor of national peanut butter day, I will be having peanut butter with everything I eat today," wrote Erin.

Kyli posted, "It's national peanut butter day? Hallelujah! #myfave."

"National Peanut Butter Day with banana are the best," Jennifer added. "My favorite treat!"

"I feel a lot less guilty for just eating half a tub of pb knowing it's national peanut butter day," Twitter user Jessica posted.

The national event is just one of many other peanut butter-inspired holidays such as Peanut Butter Lover's Day in March and National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day the following month.
