NBA MVP Stephen Curry won't leave the Warriors in 2017
Free agency is not for him, he says
Stephen Curry clarified rumors and clearly stated that he has no plans of leaving the Golden State Warriors when 2016-2017 season ends. This is despite being paid a salary that is only the fifth highest in the team. Curry was awarded MVP in the previous NBA finals, wherein his team won the championship.
It is known that Curry can possibly be an unrestricted free agent, unless the Warriors extends his contract. But Curry is not thinking of long term and wants to enjoy the moment for now. He has said before that he and his family love the Bay Area and wants to stay there for a long time. He tells Sporting News, "[F]ree agency isn't really appealing to me because I love where I'm at, love the organization I'm playing for, and the Bay Area is home for me and my family."
Curry's stats in the NBA are said to be impressive, so it will not be surprising if the Warriors take advantage of this and offer him a deal. According to ESPN, he averaged 28.3 points per game leading to the NBA championships, with a playoff record of 98 3-pointers. While Curry's current contract of $44 million leaves him with $11 million this season, and a $12 million paycheck for next season, the Warriors may plan to boost his earnings in a new contract. Sporting News speculates that it can be as much as $30 million a year, with the contract lasting up to five years.
