NBA Trade Rumors: Could the Boston Celtics Swing a Deal for Anthony Davis This Upcoming Season?

Celtics reportedly still have their eyes on Davis

Now that Carmelo Anthony has finally been dealt by the New York Knicks, it seems that the NBA trade market will be quiet for a while, unless of course things change significantly with regards to the situation of another Anthony.

The other Anthony being referred to is none other than New Orleans Pelicans forward/center Anthony Davis.

Currently, Davis is preparing for his sixth NBA season together with teammates such as DeMarcus Cousins and Jrue Holiday, and they are looking to make the postseason after a disappointing 2016-17 campaign.

The Pelicans will find that the path to the playoffs is not going to be an easy one, however, especially since numerous teams in the Western Conference have gotten better over the offseason.

Though it is certainly possible that the Pelicans will be one of the teams to make the postseason in the Western Conference this year, there is also a plausible scenario where they finish well outside of the playoff picture.

Unlike most non-playoff teams, the Pelicans do not exactly have a ton of blue chip youngsters on the roster – Davis may even be the only one who can be considered as such – so it is not like things are going to get significantly better with just the passage of time.

That is why the Pelicans are going to be a fascinating team to watch.

If midseason rolls around and the Pelicans are out of contention, are they going to check the market to see what they can possibly get for Davis?

Dealing Davis would accelerate a rebuilding project for the Pelicans, as their star big man could fetch a bounty on the market unlike any other.

This is where the Boston Celtics come in.

No team in the NBA has amassed a collection of assets as impressive as the one in Boston's possession, and as painful as it may be for the Pelicans to deal Davis, that pain could be eased by high draft picks and high-upside youngsters.

In an earlier article, ESPN's Zach Lowe noted that the "Celtics' eyes are very much trained on him," referencing Davis, so it is possible that the Pelicans do not even have to do a lot of negotiating to secure a good return for their big man.

If nothing else, this offseason has shown that the NBA is unpredictable as ever, and the upcoming season could be as well. It may be hard to imagine the Pelicans dealing Davis now, but that may no longer be the case once the season is a few months old.

More news about the latest NBA trade rumors should be made available soon.
