Oceanside police were called to the scene, and they in turn contacted experts at Sea World San Diego, The Scripps Research Institute and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The oarfish carcass was later collected by representatives from the NOAA, and they will now take away the carcass to be cut up into sections and they will form the subject for a later study.

It is quite unusual to find oarfish so close to land, and usually they are found in deep water. However, this is the second time in less than a week that an oarfish has been washed up in the area.

On Sunday a snorkeler found another 18 foot long oarfish off Catalina Island.

That specimen was dragged close to shore, and about a dozen other people rushed to the scene to help pull the sea serpent up onto shore.

According to the Catalina Island Marine Institute, oarfish can grow to more than 50 feet, and they are known to be the longest bony fish in the world.
