New 'Spider-Man' Film Casting Rumors, Details: 2 Young Actors on the Shortlist

Marvel and Sony made it clear that they will be bringing a high school, teenage Peter Parker first into the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the 2016 big screen film "Captain America: Civil War" and then on a new, standalone "Spider-Man" movie in 2017.

There has been a list of names reported over the course of months who are rooted to play the said role. Recent news, however, indicates that there are now two finalists vying to be the person behind the red and blue mask.

Birth Movies Death claimed 18-year-old "Ender's Game" actor, Asa Butterfield, as a possible pick, while the other contender is British actor Tom Holland, who recently starred with Chris Helmsworth in "In the Heart of the Sea."

"The final two contenders for Spider-Man are Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland, I am hearing. It was down to 2 last week," a social media post from the site read.

Shortly after the alleged shortlist was made public, it was then rumored that Butterfield "was the sole frontrunner" to don the web-slinger's costume.

"With the young actor's leading role in the sci-fi adaptation Ender's Game, he is the most high-profile of the group, though they are all relative newcomers," Screen Rant wrote.

However, this doesn't mean that Holland is left out already. The site pointed out Butterfield's current involvement with the "Miss Peregrine's Home of Peculiar Children."

Collider on their report also rooted for Holland's probability of taking the coveted role.

In the end, it remains to be seen as to who will be the next Peter Parker. Both publications suggested that any details on the official casting will likely be revealed soon.

For the meantime, "Captain America: Civil War" arrives on theaters this May 6, 2016. The still untitled Spider-Man standalone film, meanwhile, will premiere on July 28, 2017.
