New Spider-Man Reboot Film News, Update: Marvel and Sony Announce the New Peter Parker

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have finally found the new face of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in this 19-year-old English actor. Meanwhile, a new director has been chosen to direct the superhero's upcoming standalone film.

Actor Tom Holland has been cast as the next live-action Spider-Man, both companies announced Tuesday. According to the press statement, the "Billy Elliot the Musical" star will be playing the web-slinging superhero in its upcoming outing.

"Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we've found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man's story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe," Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal said in an interview with Marvel.com.

The UK-native will become the third actor to take on the mask of Spider-Man in a big screen feature. He will be following the steps of Tobey Maguire, who starred in the first three "Spider-Man" movies, and Andrew Garfield in the most recent two "Amazing Spider-Man" reboot films.

Another important announcement made that day is the inclusion of Jon Watts who is said to be directing the next solo film of the superhero, this time for Sony.

"As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring," Marvel Studios president for production, Kevin Feige shared his thoughts with the publication.

Chiming in was Sony Pictures boss Tim Rothman who said:

"I've worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent."

Rothman also gave his take on the casting choice they recently made.

"For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start," Rothman went on.

Tom Holland will first appear as the new "teenage" Spider-Man in the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War" with Chris Evans, as Steve Rogers/Cap, and Robert Downey Jr., as Tony Stark/Iron-Man.

Spidey's standalone film is slated to hit the theatres by 2017.
