The list is now being narrowed down to a couple of finalists, which comprise of Levine and Melfi, according to Deadline. Partners Daley and Goldstein are still in the loop for the hopeful list along with a "surprising" new contender in the person of Jon Watts.

Watts is making his full-length feature debut with "Cop Car," which will stars Kevin Bacon on Aug. 7, 2015.

The site noted that the final decision as to who will be sitting the director's chair is expected to arrive soon since the superhero picture is already slated to arrive to the big screen this July 2017.

It is still unclear though if the new director will also be responsible in penning the script or if Sony and Marvel will hire outside parties to do the job.

The decision will be made by Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal, Marvel big boss Kevin Feige, as well as Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman.

As reported earlier, the web-slinger will be featured first in the upcoming Civil War movie with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron-Man/Tony Stark and Chris Evans as Captain America/Steve Rogers this May 6, 2016.
