New York Comic Con 2017 Biggest Announcements

Major franchises dropped big announcements at this year's New York Comic Con. From an upcoming "Walking Dead" crossover to Marvel controversies, listed below are a few stories that nerds should not miss.

The spotlight was on Marvel Entertainment throughout the duration of the convention. Perhaps it started with their decision to pull out the upcoming Netflix series "The Punisher" from the event.

Netflix and Marvel decided to cancel "The Punisher" panel following the events of the Las Vegas massacre. The companies thought it would be inappropriate to introduce the gun-wielding vigilante days after 58 died and 500 were injured in a mass shooting in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Despite the companies' decision to respect those who are grieving, their decision to push through with a character centered on firearms and gun culture remains controversial.

During a closed meeting with retailers on Thursday morning, Marvel faced another issue which has plagued them since the start of the year, regarding their decision to update older white and male characters with more diverse versions.

When some retailers started throwing words like "black," "homo," and "females," and suggesting that these elements do not work, other retailers started booing them.

Unable to proceed with their agenda, Marvel abruptly decided to end the meeting.

Furthermore, the company got into another controversy when fans learned that a Custom Edition department creates comic for corporate clients and brands. When Marvel opted to promote science and technology to younger audiences, critics saw it as propaganda to get kids into the military-industrial complex.

On the bright side, Robert Kirkman, creator of "The Walking Dead," revealed a crossover between two of AMC's shows. Not much has been said about the highly-anticipated crossover but according to Kirkman, one character from one show is set to appear in another.

NYCC 2017 took place from Oct. 5 to Oct. 8 at the Javits Center.
