Josh McCown Leaves the Jets Without Signing a Deal

During the weekend, there was talk that the New York Jets might have finally found their quarterback for the 2017 season, but it looks like the search would have to continue.

According to MMQB's Albert Breer, Josh McCown has left town on Sunday without signing a contract. Both sides are still negotiating, though, but nothing is imminent right now.

Citing a league source, SNY said talks between McCown and the Jets were getting serious on Saturday and they have reportedly discussed contract parameters already. Unfortunately, it's now clear that they failed to agree on a deal, but there's still a chance that he might still end up with the Jets.

If McCown signs with the Jets, he can be used as a stopgap quarterback who will eventually give way to either Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg. He will be perfect for the job.

"McCown would essentially be what Ryan Fitzpatrick was supposed to be when he was signed prior to the 2015 season — albeit an older version. McCown would be a similar stop-gap, or bridge to a young quarterback. The difference now is that there is no obvious starter on the Jets roster, so McCown likely would be the starter when the 2017 opens," SNY's Ralph Vacchiano said in his report.

Meanwhile, the Jets still have a lot of quarterbacks to choose from on the free agent market, so there's no need to panic. Robert Griffin III and Chase Daniel are still available, but the team's not interested in signing controversial quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Well, that's not exactly a surprise since a lot of teams seem to be avoiding him.

The SNY report also mentioned that the Jets are keeping an eye on former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, and they are expected to invite him over for a free agent visit.

For now, the search for a quarterback continues for the Jets.
