'NieR: Automata' DLC: No 'Meaningful' DLCs Due to Budget Constraints, Says Game Director

"NieR: Automata" is currently available on the PlayStation 4 and PC. While the main game comes with as much as 30 hours of story content, many gamers are still expecting future downloadable content (DLC) releases that will expand the plot of the game and explore the storyline of its characters. However, recent news has revealed that Platinum Games has no plans to launch "meaningful" DLCs.

During a Q&A panel at the recently held PAX East 2017, "NieR: Automata" director Yoko Taro discussed the game's upcoming DLCs. Taro confirmed that Square Enix's Yosuke Saito was interested in making DLCs for the game but he explained that there aren't enough people and funding to create and release expansive story DLCs like those released for "The Witcher 3."

"We don't have enough manpower or budget to create that type of content," Taro said, according to The Bitbag.

"Ideally, of course if we could do something, it would be great. But that said, when we see DLCs these days, a lot of people envision something that's quite robust like story DLCs from 'Witcher 3,'" he added. "But unfortunately, 'NieR' doesn't have the budget to do so. I just hope everyone doesn't anticipate too much from the DLC content if we end up doing some."

"NieR: Automata" has sold almost 200,000 copies in its first week of release in Japan. While these figures are adequate, the game may need to sell more units to earn enough funds and prove sufficient demand to warrant the development of expansive DLC releases.

Aside from his plans for "NieR: Automata," Taro was also asked about the possibility of releasing a collection of the "Drakengard" series. In response, he made it clear that Square Enix is the one to give the last word about the matter, and asked gamers to send their pleas to green light the project within the company.

"NieR: Automata" debuted on March 7 for PS4, while the PC version was made available on March 17.
