Nintendo NX Release Date, Specs Rumors: Expected to Arrive Mid-2016, Rumored to Feature Cross-Play Support

Ever since the late Satoru Iwata announced that they were coming up with a new console, fans of Nintendo have been on the constant lookout for their next-generation console dubbed as the Nintendo NX. And their waiting may be cut short as reports say that it's going to hit store shelves earlier than expected.

According to reports, the Japanese company will begin the mass production of the Nintendo NX at the end of the first quarter of 2016. Their goal is to ship at least 20 million units next year with Foxconn Electronics reportedly tasked to manufacture the device.

However, other reports detailed that the component supplier is only able to ship an estimate of 10 to 20 million only. The company has also kept quiet and not saying or confirming anything when asked about the number of units being produced.

Not much detail is known about the console itself but, as reported by CrossMap, the Nintendo NX is said to integrate a "new membership service that encompasses smart devices and dedicated videogame systems." The company is also said to be working with AMD, which leads to the speculation that it will come with the x86-based chip from the company or from Intel. Other rumors point that it will no longer carry the optical drive and replace it with SD card or hard disk drive to store games.

Another report also noted that an essential feature of the upcoming Nintendo NX is cross-play support. The source said that it will "chain several pieces of hardware into an ecosystem with conditions favorable to cross play." It will also be more of a platform rather than a console.

Cinema Blend also reported that the device is rumored to have NX development kits and that these kits are already being distributed to studios.

Nintendo has not released any official statement yet so it's best to take the reports with a pinch of salt for now.
