Nokia HumanForm Is Unlike the N9; Concept Smartphone Bends and Twists (VIDEO)

In a preview to the future of its cell phones, Nokia has introduced a flexible OLED display screen for its new concept smarthphone called the HumanForm, which will be bendable.

"Nokia HumanForm was created in a joint effort to translate the most promising new nanotechnologies into meaningful user experiences, in order to create real devices and set goals for future product portfolios," the Nokia Research Center said in a release.

"The project is a key step towards bringing significant user experience benefits to the market, enabled by nanotechnology," the statement continues. "Nokia HumanForm is a visionary solution for a dynamically flexible device for uses beyond touch screen and voice communication where technology is invisible and intuition takes over. Natural interactions are enabled with a kinetic user interface."

Nokia has brought the product under the name of "Nokia kinetic display." The screen could be bent or twisted at the middle or edges.

In a featured print add for the phones prototype, the oval shaped device is shown being bent and twisted with lines below that says: "Flex Control. Twist to browse. Bend to Zoom. Electro Tactile. Feel the image."

"You are facilitated with a complete new way to control the device as for the weather is frosty and you are tiring gloves and you need to make a phone call, in that situation a touchscreen and gloves don’t make out well together," said Soumya Pratihari for the tech blog TechCular. "But thanks to this concept, as it might simply make use with ease, even if you are wearing boxing gloves."

Now scrolling and selection can be done by twisting the phone. Selection and zooming options can be done with bending. The position and amount of bending and twisting decides the kind of UI operation performed on the phone.

There is no date available yet for the release of the HumanForm.

A video of the phone's performance can be viewed in a recent two-minute clip:
