Nurses File Lawsuit After Hospital Forces Them to Aid Abortion

Nurses have filed a lawsuit against a New Jersey hospital, claiming it is threatening to fire them if they refuse to assist in abortions.

The suit was filed against the University of Medicine and Dentistry on Monday. The nurses said the hospital is violating state law by forcing them to participate in abortions that go against their religious and moral beliefs, according to Fox News.

“The hospital told the nurses they have no regard for their religious beliefs,” said Matthew Bowman, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund, to Fox News

"They were going to be assigned these abortions or they would be terminated,” Bowman added.

Bowman claimed that nurses forced to perform abortions against their volition is against the law.

“The hospital passed a policy and put one of the nurses who did abortions in a supervisory position and started forcing nurses to assist in abortions out of the blue,” Bowman said. “It’s in complete violation of federal and state law – that says you can’t force people to assist abortions.”

Bowman also said the lawsuit was filed for nurses who “possess strongly held religious and moral beliefs that she may not participate in the process of an abortion that causes the death of a preborn child.”

A representative for the hospital said there was no knowledge of the lawsuit; therefore, she was unable to comment on it.

Hospital officials were supposed to meet with nurses to discuss the situation, but when the nurses arrived with a lawyer the meeting was cancelled, according to Bowman.

Bowman has called on the United States district court in New Jersey to cut funding for the hospital until it stops forcing their nurses to aid in abortions.
