Nvidia Working On New GPUs For Notebooks: GeForce GTX 980MX And GeForce GTX 970MX

The American company Nvidia, which is known for its graphics processing units, is reported to be cooking up something new for notebooks and laptops. This comes after their successful release of the GeForce GTX 980M, which is the first among its Maxwell-based GPUs. At the same time, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 970M was declared a favorite among PC gamers over other GPUs such as those of Intel, as well as other Nvidia GPU models, according to a report in Tech Times.

The GeForce GTX 980M, which was released in 2015, was known for giving "desktop-grade" graphics but made for more mobile computing, such as notebooks and laptops. According to the report, the GPU provided gamers with high-quality graphics for gaming on-the-go.

The key component to the GTX 980M and GTX 970M is what the company called the GM204 graphics core which the company declared as having "big potential" and this is the same graphics core that the company will be using in its upcoming graphics cards.

According to the report, Nvidia is working on two new mobile GPUs: the GeForce GTX 980MX and the GeForce GTX 970MX. The GTX 980MX is the next generation successor of the GTX 980M, and is actually a souped-up version of the GeForce GTX 970 (for desktop PCs) that was improved for use with notebooks and laptops.

In terms of specs, the GTX 980MX has 1,664 Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) cores, 64 raster operation units (ROPs) and at least 104 texture mapping units (TMU). It is reportedly clocked at a basic 941 MHz with a memory clock of 5.00 GHz. This gives users a bandwidth of 160 GB/second. The GPU's mobility chip can sport either 4GB of GDDR5 memory or a larger 8GB GDDR5 memory.

The specs of the GTX 970MX reveals 1,408 CUDA cores, 56 ROPs and 88 TMUs. Full bandwidth capability is at 120 GB/second. Memory can either be a 3GB GDDR5 or a 6GB GDDR5.

Both the GTX 980MX and the GTX 970MX are said to have Thermal Design Powers of 125W, which is similar to the TDP of the older GTX 980M and GTX 970M.

Nvidia has yet to make any announcements with regards to when the new GPUs will be available and how much they will be.
