NVIDIA's Tegra X1 Mobile Processor Unveiled News, Details: New 'Superchip' Arrives With Twice the Power

NVIDIA's keynote during their Sunday presentation in the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which is currently held in Las Vegas focused on their next mobile "superchip," the NVIDIA Tegra X1.

The 256-core Tegra X1 is said to bring over one teraflop of processing power to mobile devices, which is more than twice than its predecessor, the Tegra K1, as reported by TheVerge.com.

Citing NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, the new Tegra is built atop the Maxwell architecture and that there's currently no other like it. Aside from the 256-core Maxwell GPU, the Tegra X1 includes 8 CPU cores which consist of 4 Cortex –A57 and 4 Cortex-A53 CPUs. The specs would be more than enough to handle 4K videos at 60Hz.

The newly-presented chip is the first mobile processor that can compete, in terms of processing power, with supercomputers and gaming consoles. The Xbox One can do 1.33 Teraflops while the PlayStation 4 can hit around 1.84.

They will make possible safer driving, more secure cities and great conveniences for all of us. To achieve this dream, enormous advances in visual and parallel computing are required. The Tegra X1 mobile super chip, with its one teraflops of processing power, is a giant step into this revolution," Huang told PhoneArena.com.

To further demonstrate the potential of the processing chip, Huang showed a real-time demo of "Unreal Tournament."
