Oakland Athletics Roster Rumors: Henderson Alvarez Agrees to One-Year Deal

Oakland made a step forward to improve their bullpen with the addition of free agent right-hander Henderson Alvarez in a one-year deal worth $4 million, with additional incentives that can go up to $1.6 million. The As made the announcement on Monday, giving formality to Alvarez's entry to the Athletics franchise, his third team in his career.

Both the As and Alvarez already had a verbal agreement in place last Dec.18, but it took more time than usual for him to get a physical because of the Christmas holidays.

As a slider pitcher and sinker, the Venezuelan pitcher saw his best season in 2014 when he was voted as an All-Star. Playing for Miami that season, he was 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA. But because of injuries, the Marlins didn't offer him a new contract for next season, officially making him eligible to sign with a new team.

However, the 25-year-old is not expected to play at least in the start of next season because he is still recovering from a shoulder injury performed in July of this year. But baseball pundits see him as a potential member of Oakland's starting rotation.

During his stint Miami for the 2015 season, he went 0-4 with 6.45 ERA in four starts, but it was overshadowed by injuries he suffered on his right shoulder. He eventually decided to have surgery in July, effectively ending his season, and eventually his stay with the Marlins.

In his five seasons split with Toronto and Miami, he, so far, has produced 27-34 with a 3.80 ERA in 92 starts. Although his best year as a pro was in 2014, he also made a mark in 2013 when he produced a no-hitter.

With the As, he will be competing with Sonny Gray, Rich Hill, and several pitchers recuperating from injuries, including Chris Bassit, Jesse Hahn, and Kendall Graveman.
