Several people have been killed after a suspect opened fire at OIKOS University, a Christian college in East Oakland on Monday, and thousands have taken to Twitter to offer support.
Johanna Watson from the Oakland Police department confirmed that several people had been killed and others wounded, although the exact number is still unknown.
"We do have fatalities, I cannot confirm the number of fatalities we have at this time. We additionally have victims who have suffered from gunshot wounds," Johanna Watson from Oakland Police, Watson said at a press conference.
Multiple people were shot after a lone gunman raided a classroom at the college, with at least five people killed and six others injured, according to KTVU.com.
The suspect is now said to be in custody, and thousands of shocked well wishers took to Twitter to tweet messages of support.
"My prayers are with those who suffered with the shooting at OIKOS University in Oakland, CA...may God be with you all. Tragedy," Francisca May tweeted.
"My heart goes out to the student and families to those of school shooting at Oakland,CA," Jessie Garrison.
"Heartbroken after hearing about the school shooting in Oakland, CA. So close to home. #prayers #love," Erika Attwater tweeted.
"#Oakland shooting next to my old office on Edgewater and the suspect arrested near my house in #Alameda. This is a little too crazy," Desiree Bulda tweeted.
Although police are yet to release the suspect's identity, he has been described as a Korean man in his 40s with a heavy build and wearing khaki clothing, according to CBS News.
"One of the people who was inside the building, she was saying there is a crazy guy inside. She did say someone got shot in the chest right next to her before she got taken off in an ambulance," witness Brian Snow told KGO-TV.
OIKOS offers classes in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine, according to the college's website.
