'Ocean's Ocho' Release Date, Cast, Spoilers & Updates: Female-Driven Reboot of 'Ocean's Eleven' To Feature Epic Team-up of Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett & Sandra Bullock
The gender-flipped reboot of the comedy heist film "Ocean's Eleven" is in the works with a stellar cast. The female-driven spinoff "Ocean's Ocho" is reportedly assembling a promising lineup that includes Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock and Kate Blanchet.
The Promising Cast
The Verge reported last year that Bullock and Blanchet will be headlining the all-female "Ocean's Eleven" spinoff. On Wednesday, Deadline updated that Warner Bros. strengthened its spectacular lineup for "Ocean's Ocho" with seven out of eight principal cast already filled.
According to the report, in addition to Bullock and Blanchet, popstar Rihanna and Oscar award-winning actress Hathaway have signed on for the gender-flipped reboot. Actresses Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling, along with hip-hop artist Awkwafina, have also inked a deal for the Warner Bros. movie.
The star-studded film will be helmed by "The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross. It will be produced by Steven Soderbergh, the director of the "Ocean's Eleven" and the sequels "Ocean's Twelve" and "Ocean's Thirteen." The production of the film is slated to start this October.
Release Date & Plot Details
Warner Bros. is yet to announce the release date for "Ocean's Ocho" but it is estimated to hit theaters in early 2018. Moreover, per E! News, the plot of the film remains unknown but given the fact that it is a female-driven reboot of the original "Ocean's" series, it is safe to assume that it is still a casino heist movie.
Ross disclosed to Slashfilm in June that "Ocean's Ocho" will still have the same tone with its predecessors. He explained that he will never try to reinvent the tone of incoming film because it is more of an extension and a continuation of the "Ocean's" trilogy.
Moreover, the star-studded team-up is yet to cast one actress. The Guardian reported that Elizabeth Banks of "Hunger Games" has been rumored to complete the principal cast.
The Trend
The announcement of the film's powerful lineup came after the all-female reboot of "Ghostbusters" received social media backlash from the fans of the original all-male version. Per ABC, the revelation of "Ocean's Ocho" cast gained mixed reactions online. While others lauded Warner Bros. for assembling a stellar cast, some lambasted the company for flipping the original trilogy.
"Ocean's Eleven," released in 2011, assembled big stars including George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. The film, which revolved around robbing Las Vegas casinos, raked $450 million worldwide. Its 2004 and 2007 sequels generated a total of $670 million.
