Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund to Return for 'Tron 3'

Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund are teaming up to reprise their roles in "Tron 3," the sequel to 2010's sci-fi film, "Tron: Legacy."

Disney Pictures has given the go signal for a third installment in the "Tron" franchise, and Olivia Wilde will be returning with Garret Hedlund for "Tron 3," which is scheduled to start filming in Vancouver on October this year.

In the 2010 follow-up to the original 1982 film, Garret Hedlund played Sam Flynn, son of Kevin Flynn, who was the original creator of the arcade game, Tron. Olivia Wilde was Quorra, an ISO warrior created by Kevin Flynn who helps Sam escape back to the real world after he is trapped the virtual reality GRID created by his father.

Both actors are expected to be stepping back into their roles when the Walt Disney Pictures movie makes its entrance in an as yet unannounced date.

No plot details have yet been released but Justin Springer, who worked on "Tron: Legacy," has been announced as attached to produced the third film.

The first "Tron" was not immediately a hit when it debuted in theaters in 1982, but its popularity took off when the special effects-heavy movie developed a large cult following. The sequel, starring Wilde, Hedlund, and Jeff Bridges, who also played Kevin Flynn in the original film, was a $400 million success at the box office, ranking 11 in the top films of 2010.

The hit sequel spawned a 2012 animated series spin off on Disney XD, "Tron: Uprising," and a manga version in 2011 by Earth Star Entertainment in Japan.

It is still not known whether Jeff Bridges will return to his role as computer programmer and ENCOM CEO, Kevin Flynn, having sacrificed himself to allow his son to escape the GRID in the 2010 film.

Wilde will be starting the "Tron 3" project fresh off her contract from Blumhouse's horror fantasy flick, "The Lazarus Effect," while Hedlund is currently playing the young Captain Hook in Warner Bros.' "Pan," in a retelling of the J.M. Barrie classic.
