Opening the Gate to Life

John 10:10 NIV

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Have you ever thought about how deceitful Satan is? Think about it. He doesn't appear as the overblown, fire-breathing, drooling monster like Hollywood portrays him. He's not that obvious. Instead, he tries to trick us with his lies and deceptions. He tries to show us what appears to be a better way. He uses the same ploy on us that he did on Adam and Eve in the garden. First, he cleverly attempts to make us believe that we can't depend on God's Word. Then he shows us something that appears to be beautiful and appealing. He can even masquerade as an angel of light himself (2 Corinthians 11:14) He talks to us with what appears to be irrefutable logic. He tells us that we will be happy if only we can get rich... if only we can get married... if we had only married someone else. if we could get our spouse to change. if we hit the bars on Friday and Saturday night... if we can get a better job... if we are in control of our lives... if we realize that we don't really need God because we are really God ourselves. This is what Jesus was trying to tell us when He said, "The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy." Through his lies, Satan will destroy a person's desire to be with God. Through his lies, Satan will steal a person's ability to have eternal life. Through his lies, he will lead a person to death and an eternity in the fires of hell.

In the alternative, Jesus does not lie. Rather, He is the only source of truth. He is the only door to life - both eternally and to the full right now, right here, this day. There are no more beautiful words than "I have come that they (that's you and me!) may have life, and might have it to the full." Now isn't that much more appealing than any of Satan's lies?
