'Orange is the New Black': Series Creator Jenji Kohan Explains New 'Lighter' Season

Netflix's hit original jailbird drama series "Orange Is The New Black" will tread on the "lighter" tone for its upcoming third season. And as for what that really means, here's what we heard:

Jenji Kohan talked about the show at the For Your Consideration event in DGA on Wednesday. During the panel, the series creator dished some details about the "lightness" of Season 3.

"It's lighter than season 2, it's a season of faith, it's a season of motherhood, it's a progression of everyone's stories," Kohan explained. "I think we get deeper into our characters and we meet people."

In line with its lightheartedness, the new chapter will still serve its usual doses of drama and comedy.

"It's very important to me to play in both worlds because I don't think anything is all serious or all humorous," Kohan went on to say. "I remember watching dramas and thinking when there was no humor or no comic relief that they didn't reflect any sort of reality because there's no such thing as life without humor. (But) you need a dramatic spine to hold it together."

Variety, who also covered the event, meanwhile mentioned the cast members who were present during the panel which includes Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks and Taylor Schilling, to name a few.

The actress who played the character Sophia Burset tackled on the relevance of the show to its viewers, especially the women.

"It validates people's experiences," Cox said.. "So many people, I think, have watched our show and felt their experiences, their bodies, their gender identity, their sexuality, their age, are validated in the diverse women that are portrayed on our show. When you can see someone like you on TV, it's like, 'OK, I exist now.'"

"Orange is the New Black" Season 3 is slated to return on the network streaming site this Friday, June 12.
