'Overwatch' News: Game Surpasses 35 Million Registered Players as Halloween Event Goes Live

This week, Blizzard Entertainment's "Overwatch" hit another milestone as it garnered over 35 million registered players just as it opened its anticipated Halloween-themed event.

In an update through the title's official Twitter page, Blizzard confirmed that 35 million players have joined the game. In their true fashion, the developers thanked players and said: "What a bunch of misfits and freaks we got here—we love it!"

The new breakthrough in the number of registered players was a continuation of "Overwatch's" legacy of being the fastest growing game from Blizzard Entertainment. It is also important to note that these numbers do not necessarily translate to the actual game copies sold. But regardless of how much the game has profited in the past year, the numbers are still remarkable.

"Overwatch" was released in May 2016, and just after six months, Blizzard confirmed that the game had accumulated 20 million registered players by November 2016.

About five months later, in April this year, that number grew by another 10 million. This brought "Overwatch's" number of registered players to over 30 million.

Reports suggested that the growth in the number of "Overwatch's" registered players was exceptionally impressive considering that it was a paid game and most of its additional contents and limited-time gameplay features came with price tags as well.

On the other hand, the continuous flow of game contents, features, events, and leagues are also factors that keep millions of "Overwatch" players active and curious about the game. Added to that, Blizzard has always made an effort to expand the franchise onto other media materials.

For example, they have also released films providing the backstories of the game's most-loved heroes, like when they revealed more about Mei's past life in the animated short titled "Rise and Shine."

Last week, Blizzard opened this year's Halloween event for "Overwatch" players, which means the collection of loot boxes with exclusive skins has started once again. Players have an option to play and try their luck in gathering as much loot boxes as they can, or they can choose the easier path and spend real money to buy them.

In this Halloween event, players have the chance to collect up to 140 cosmetic items that - apart from skins - include emotes, voice lines, special intros, and more until Nov. 2.
