'Pan Am' TV Show Premieres: Hit or Miss?

The new 1960’s set series “Pan Am” has premiered on ABC sparking mixed reactions.

Using the Cold War as a backdrop, “Pan Am” follows the lives of fictitious airline stewardesses and pilots, including actress Christina Ricci.

Ricci is best known for her roles in films “The Addams Family” and “Casper.” The Golden Globe-nominated actress stars as a rebellious and energetic stewardess in the series.

Mike Vogel, Kelli Garner, and Morgot Robbie co-star in “Pan Am.”

The era of traveling by flight in the 60’s involved strict requirements of in-flight personnel, including weight and height prerequisites of women. Passengers enjoyed service on a first-name basis and were served elaborate meals in flight.

In the first episode, the audience is informed that one of the flight attendants is an undercover spy for the CIA.

Premiering the same night as the final season of the “Desperate Housewives” series, the new ABC show could “take flight” and boost viewership. The complex plot of “Pan Am” includes comedy, espionage, romance, and drama: and viewers took to Twitter in reaction of the premiere.

Amy wrote, “Pan Am is my new Sunday show! Love it!”

“Pan Am! Loving it already! Ah their costume dept on set is epic!” Wrote Twitter user Ebru.

“5 minutes into Pan Am and I have decided it’s the worst show in the history of television,” stated Dave.

Richard wrote, “Is “Pan Am” filmed live and improvised? Because none of this makes any sense.”

“Pan Am” has been deemed by critics to be the brighter version of the AMC dramatic series “Mad Men,” also set in the 60’s. Many Twitter users also drew comparisons between the two series.

“I like how Pan Am was not trying to be madmen. And also nice to see a period show with a large female cast,” wrote Stefan.

Samuel wrote, “Pan Am: I venture that the Wardrobe Mistresses of Mad Men were most unwise to take Flight without the SCRIPTWRITERS.”

Twitter user Nora mentioned “Mad Men’s protagonist, writing, “This Pan Am show needs a Don Draper ASAP.”

New episodes of “Pan Am” air Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
