While President Barack Obama delivered the annual State of the Union address on Tuesday, an American pastor has offered an alternative – God's State of the Union.
"God is calling every American to give all their hearts to him," Steven Andrew, president of the USA Christian Ministries, told The Christian Post during a phone interview explaining his new video titled "God's State of the Union."
"This is important because all of the blessings like the economy, our freedom, national security – they all come from God through the fruit of obedience. If we sin against God, we see the opposite happening: we lose our freedoms, national security is weakened, and so on."
"What I hope to accomplish here is that Christians across the USA would come to God asking for mercy by Jesus' blood so our sins can be forgiven," Andrew noted. "If we do that then God can bless America. Everything else is going to fail. All the politicians will fail if they ignore God and the USA will be harmed."
In his 12-minute address found on his website – created to inform people of God's mercy and forgiveness of sins – Andrew repeatedly pointed to the cross and the work of Jesus Christ as the foundation to understanding "God's State of the Union."
"The first thing I want to tell you is to look at Jesus," he shared. "Look at him on the cross. Look at the cross that says your sins are forgiven. Look at his blood that cleanses us from all sin. And I want to tell you the same power of Jesus' blood that cleanses your sins and my sins forgives the United States of America."
Recalling Jesus' words in John 8, Andrew asked, "Do you remember what Jesus told the woman caught in adultery? 'Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.'"
What kind of God was willing to overlook: a lukewarm church, a nation that took God out of the government, schools, and courts, 53-plus million abortions, sexual and homosexual sins, Christians voting for ungodly people and trust in foreign gods, the author of Making A Strong Nation wondered.
"Can you imagine a love so great? Can you imagine a God so merciful that says neither do I condemn you, if you come to him through Jesus Christ? That's the good news of our covenant. Our covenant promises that God forgives us when you come to him through Jesus Christ."
"God's State of the Union is this," Andrew declared. "God wants to show mercy to the United States of America and to the individuals in our nation and he tells us that he does not condemn us but that we are to go and sin no more."
The frequent radio and television commentator also spoke about America as a covenant Christian nation founded on Christian ideals.
He explained that when the Jamestown settlers came to America, they planted a 7-foot-oak cross on the Virginia shore after praying fasting and praying this covenant prayer:
"We do hereby dedicate this land and ourselves to reach the people within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to raise up godly generations after us and with these generations take the kingdom of God to all the earth. May this covenant of dedication remain to all generations as long as this earth remains and may this land along with England be an evangelist to the world. May all who see this cross remember what we have done here and may those who come here to inhabit join us in this covenant and in this most noble work that the Holy Scriptures may be fulfilled."
Similarly, Andrew stated that when Congress first convened, the founding fathers, including George Washington and John Adams, prayed in Jesus' name and read the Holy Bible as the their first act.
"The United States of America is a Christian nation to all generations. I want to ask you right now to affirm that the Lord is the God of the USA and we are his people. As we do that that will bring God's blessing into our nation."
"God's State of the Union is that we would receive his mercy and that we would go forward and build the United States of America on his word," he added. "Jesus tells us that we have to build on the rock. When we build on his word, we have a foundation that cannot be shaken."
Beginning and closing the address in prayer, the USA Christian Ministries leader concluded, "Father as your Christian nation we affirm our covenant that you are our God and we are your people. We love you with all our heart, soul mind and strength. Jesus is our king. We obey what you say in the Holy Bible. We love one another as Jesus loved us. In Jesus' name, Amen."
During the address, Andrew also made a reference to the "ungodliness" of President Obama, whom he believes is not a Christian.
When asked by The Christian Post why he doubted Obama's faith, Andrew said that according to "his fruit," Obama is not a Christian, but a "wolf in sheep's clothing."
"What is Obama's fruit? His fruit is taking God out of government, lying that we're not a Christian nation, leaving living babies alone to die who survive botched abortions, repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell...this is his fruit. So according to our Lord Jesus Christ, Obama's a wolf in sheep's clothing. It doesn't matter what he says."
Andrew believes that Obama was trying to turn George Washington's "Christian law into a non-Christian law," in regards to repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell.
"Ever since the beginning of the USA, homosexual sin has been outlawed in the military and the reason is because we want God to bless us in the military. And now for the first time in America people are trying to change into non-Christian ways," he said.
"Obama is against Christ...he's trying to break our covenant with God. The greatest evil anyone can do is leading a nation away from Jehovah."
Encouraging Christians to hold fast to the founding ideals of the nation and not give up what they already had, Andrew desired that America would continue to be a "covenant Christian nation."
"We have always been a Christian nation and we always will be a Christian nation. The reason is because we are a covenant Christian nation. And you can't break a covenant."
The pastor also remained positive that Christians would unite together under one mission, just like Obama challenged Americans to do during his closing remarks, regardless of their race, color, class, party, and etc.
"I'm hopeful that we'll put our eyes on Jesus and that we'll unite together in Christ and by turning to Christ we'll now get God's blessings and that will recover the nation," Andrew closed. "There's hope for the USA in turning to Jesus Christ...all he asks is that we turn from our wicked ways and he promises he will heal our land."
