'Penny Dreadful' Cast News, Update: Fan Favorite Patti LuPone Returns In Season 3 For A Different Role

Showtime's hit gothic horror drama TV series "Penny Dreadful" is apparently fond of having Patti LuPone around that it has decided to bring back the multi-awarded actress for its upcoming Season 3 but in a completely different role.

The report from TVLine said that the 66-year-old who has been known for her stage musical works will be returning to the critically-acclaimed thriller as a series-regular for the part of Dr. Seward, the "American therapist who treats Eva Green's Vanessa with an unconventional new approach."

For those who missed it, the two-time Grammy Award and Tony Award winner has guest-starred in the second season of the Showtime program as the Cut-Wife.

The third season of the John Logan drama will also see a host of other newcomers including Shazad Latif who plays the part of Robert Louis Stevenson's character Dr. Henry Jekyll.

Latif is reportedly one of the five new guest-stars slated to appear in the nine-episode season.

Additional casting information from TVLine also mentioned "Dexter" star Christian Camargo who joins as Dr. Alexander Sweet, "a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa."

Along with him is the "Jupiter Ascending" actor Sam Barnett who will appear as the "mysterious young secretary" to LuPone's character. "Hell on Wheels" star Wes Studi meanwhile grabbed the series-regular role of Kaetenay, "an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan (Josh Hartnett) who also becomes an ally to Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton).

Lastly, "Far from the Madding Crowd" star Jessica Barden is also joining as Justine, "a young acolyte to Lily (Billie Piper) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney).

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Logan revealed that "Season Three is a real change of pace" for the show.

"We can get out of the alleys and cobblestone bars of Victorian London and see a bit more of the world. Essentially there's a pull bringing these characters together, and it's supernatural, partly romantic, partly shared destiny," the EP said (via THR).
