'Person of Interest' Season 6 News, Updates, Spoilers: Prospects of Spinoff/Sixth Season Still Dire; Questions about Finale that Remain Unanswered

Months after its supposed finale, "Person of Interest" still has a large following of fans clamoring for its return to television in any form, whether it be a spinoff or a sixth season. Having ended its five-season run in June, fans of the CBS sci-fi show aren't convinced that the finale made for a satisfactory ending. The din had grown such that a petition on Change.org was dedicated solely to press CBS to revive the show, which at present has more than 50,000 signatories.

Rumors began to float that CBS took notice of the high demand for the return of "Person of Interest," and is allegedly taking it into consideration. But by the looks of it, it looks like the axe has fallen for the CBS series for good, as the producers and cast themselves do not think a reunion in any form would still be possible.

In a previous interview with Deadline, showrunners Jonah Nolan and Greg Plageman talked about the possibility of reviving "Person of Interest," either by way of a sixth season or a spinoff. After all, the show did end on quite a cliffhanger: John Reese (Jim Caviezel) had sacrificed himself to take down the Machine, only to find out later that the Machine survived, and had reached out to Sameen Shaw (Sarah Shahi) in Reese's stead.

But the two do not look especially optimistic on that front. According to them, the window of opportunity for a spinoff, one where they will be able to elaborate on the canon and the mythology of "Person of Interest," has long since lapsed. Season 2 had been the ideal time to do that, they revealed. But they resolved not to do so, because they didn't want to create another show and end up impoverishing both the new and the ongoing one.

What could have been resolved if 'Person of Interest' was revived

But while Nolan and Plageman agree that they have given the show the best possible ending they could have, there are still a lot of burning questions and loose ends left during the "Person of Interest" Season 5 that a spinoff or sixth season would be able to resolve. Firstly, of course, was the matter of the Machine, which was last seen rebooting itself back up and reaching out to Shaw via a public pay phone. How will it be able to go about helping other people without admin and ground troops, then?

Moreover, Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) had made it all the way to Italy with Grace (Carrie Preston) in an attempt to have a normal life away from the Machine, Will he ever know that the Machine survived? Until CBS responds to the ongoing clamor for a "Person of Interest" return, these questions will remain unanswered.
