'Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire' Update: Crowdfunding Exceeds $3 Million; New Feature Teased

The upcoming video game "Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire" recently hit a major milestone when its crowdfunding campaign surpassed the $3-million mark.

The video game sequel originally had a funding goal of $1.1 million on the crowdfunding site Fig, and successfully surpassed that goal in less than 24 hours. As of this writing, "Deadfire" has managed to attract over 28,000 backers, earning more than $3.5 million. Funding is reportedly split evenly between traditional crowdfunding and investments from those seeking equity in the project through Fig Game Shares.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you to all our fans, backers, and investors for helping us reach the amazing milestone of $3 million dollars!" developer Obsidian Entertainment said in a recent update.

"It's truly amazing that we've hit this point. We're now the campaign with the most backers in Fig history, and it's due to our amazing fans who, like us, want to make Pillars of Eternity II the deepest, most robust, and most engrossing RPG it can possibly be," the developer added. "We're so excited to be able to include companion relationships, which we know are going to make the game even more incredible."

More recently, Obsidian released another update revealing that "Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire" will include a new open-world exploration and discovery feature to its gameplay on both land and sea. In the new feature, gamers will be the captain of their own ship. With their own ships, gamers will get to play "Deadfire" differently. They will be able to freely explore the islands of the Deadfire with the new world map.

The ship featured in "Deadfire" is a Dyrwoodan sloop called the "Defiant," which will serve as a player's mobile base of operations. Gamers will also get to customize, upgrade and add personal touches to the ship.

Crowdfunding for "Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire" concludes on Feb. 24. The video game is currently due to be released on PC in the first quarter of 2018.
