Google Pixel 2 Updates: New Internal Codename 'Taimen' Leaked

Recently, the internal codename "Taimen" has been making rounds in the rumor mill, and sources confirm that it is meant for a third smartphone that Google is currently working on.

"Multiple sources" have confirmed to Droid Life that Google is working on a third upcoming smartphone that the company is initially calling the Taimen. However, there is a scarcity of information for it as of the moment, according to the report.

Droid Life's sources have also reportedly confirmed the earlier rumored internal codenames for Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, which are "Muskie" and "Walleye," respectively. Though there is not that much available information yet, it can be recalled that over the years, the fish codenames that Google use for their smartphones are more likely hints at what to expect from the upcoming devices in terms of its dimensions.

So applying that principle this year, the Taimen smartphone is possibly the biggest device among the three smartphones that have been confirmed to be in the pipeline. The actual taimen fish, aka the Eurasian giant trout, is also popular for being the "world's largest salmonid." It can grow to as much as 6.5 feet and weigh up to 200 pounds.

Given these clues, it can be easily assumed that the Taimen phone is much larger than the upcoming Muskie and Walleye units. Droid Life considers the possibility that Taimen is a Google smartphone but will be introduced under a brand that is separate from the Pixel.

Forbes, on the other hand, suggests that if the Taimen codename means the device is hefty in terms of its size, Google might be working on a new tablet product which is going to be its first since the underwhelming release of the 8.9-inch Nexus 9 in 2014.

However, Droid Life disagrees that the Taimen could be a tablet since their sources have reportedly told them that Taimen "is a phone, specifically."

On other news, Google's head of hardware department Rick Osterloh has earlier confirmed with Android Pit that the company is working on the successors of Pixel and Pixel XL, saying: "There is an annual rhythm in the industry. ... You can count on a successor this year, even if you don't hear a date from me now."
