Four people have been killed in a plane crash near Crystal Lake, Ill, in the suburbs of Chicago.

The crash took place at about 10.30 a.m. local time, Elizabeth Isham Cory, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration has said.

In the immediate aftermath investigators still were unable to determine where the Cirrus-SR20 departed from, but further details are expected to emerge soon.

Reports described the plan crashing down near Route 14 and North Ridgefield Road.

Cory also confirmed that the plane was not talking to air traffic controllers at the time of the crash, and was flying by “Visual Flight Rules” (VFR). That basically means that the pilot was flying by looking out of the window.

It is expected that further information about the crash will soon be released from the McHenry County coroner's office.
