Pop star and "X Factor" judge Demi Lovato, 21, revealed on Monday that she was once so addicted to cocaine she used to "smuggle" the drug on airplanes to ensure she always had it when she needed it.

"I couldn't go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes," she revealed in an interview with Access Hollywood on Monday.

"I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it. That's how difficult it got and that was even with somebody [with me], I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me [and] I was able to hide it from them as well," said the star.

Lovato who recently penned a memoir Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year about overcoming her addictions explained that she was able to get away with her past behavior because she is a gifted manipulator.

"I'm very, very good at manipulating people and that was something that I did in my disease, I would manipulate everyone around me. There were times I would just continue to lie, so that everything looked OK on the outside," she said.

The memoir, published by Feiwel & Friends just under a month ago, is "a powerful 365-day collection of Demi's most powerful, honest, and hopeful insights. Each day will provide the readers with a quote, a personal reflection and a goal," according to a description of the work on Amazon.com.

Reviewers of the book on goodreads.com have rated the book highly so far, an average of 4.76 out of possible five stars as of Wednesday morning.

""Staying Strong - 365 days a year" by Demi Lovato isn't the handbook of good fortune, but it's certainly a book that can help the reader to feel better," wrote Denis Vukosav who gave the book a five star rating. "What makes this book different from all the others is the fact that it was written by a very young person, and it is usually considered that life wisdom can only come from older and experienced people who went through lot of things in their life. But this book manages to prove otherwise."

"Staying Strong 365 days a year was not what I expected, it's more of a manifesto of each day she's survived. The problem of today. A goal for today. Repeat the next day. One at a time. Keep going. With a ton of inspirational quotes, sayings, and even lyrics (and personally, my favourite lyric from Paramore's "Playing God.") can determine how you feel for that day, that gives you control enough to go throughout that day," wrote reviewer Kirsty-Marie Jones who also gave the book a five star rating.

It is "the perfect gift you could give any fan, or any person struggling through, fighting through, a reminder that you're not as alone as you think, and helpful tips to keep you striving," she added.
