'Power Rangers' Movie Release Date: Premiere Set for 2016, Says Lionsgate
Lionsgate, who brought us worldwide blockbusters like "The Hunger Games," "Divergent," "Ender's Game," and many more will once again offer another theatrical treat that movie-goers will surely love – "Power Rangers" the movie.
Lionsgate and Saban (the creators of MMPR series) had entered a deal to reboot the much-loved live-action franchise which is scheduled for release on July 22, 2016. Writing the scripts are screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz whose previous outputs include "Thor" and "X-men" sequels, according to Screenrant.
Creators Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur will produce the film along with Roberto Orci. The entertainment company hasn't yet found a director to helm the upcoming project or come up with names to play the roles.
The movie will revisit the origins of the "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers," a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.
The MMPR characters instantly gained popularity when they were first featured at Fox Kids in a TV series of the same name. It has since then become a pop culture phenomenon which inspired a number of full-length films first in 1995 with "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie."
The following years saw another success for the franchise as "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" hit the screens. It has later become the basis for another hit series "Power Rangers Turbo."
With the summer 2016 release date, Power Rangers will likely to go up against other movie royalties including King Arthur, "Independence Day 2," "Bourne 5" and the third "Planet of Apes" installment as they are slated to hit the theaters around the same time.
