Powerball Jackpot Couple Waits 6 Months Before Claiming Prize

The record $1.6 billion Powerball drawing in January last year yielded three winners. While two of the winners have come forward to claim their pieces of the prize, the third one waited for a few months in anonymity.

Last Friday, Marvin and Mae Acosta went to a state lottery branch in Van Nuys to claim their winnings of $528.8 million. The information was disclosed by California lottery spokesman Alex Traverso, Yahoo reported. The winning ticket was bought in Chino Hills, California, six months ago.

Powerball Jackpot Couple Opted for Cash Option

According to CNN, they opted to get the cash option of $327.8 million instead of the $528.8 million which will be paid over 30 years. The couple's winnings are considered to be the biggest winning in California's lottery history.

The Acostas did not appear in any of media requests but they did say a few words in a statement. They said that they have put some of their money to charities and to a Trust. The Acostas have asked for privacy and are grateful for all the well wishes they have received.

Under the California law, lottery winners are mandated to be publicly announced. While the Acostas are on record, their private information has been kept confidential. This is to dissuade scammers and crooks from going after lottery winners.

Lottery officials have commended the Acostas for their careful planning before getting their Powerball winning prize. It is recommended for winners to get a team of financial managers and legal advisors to help them manage their winnings.

"We couldn't be happier for them and are thrilled they took the time to assemble the right team before coming in to claim," Hugo Lopez, California Lottery Director said, ABC News noted.
