Recap of Wednesday, Oct. 8 draw

On Wednesday's Powerball, the winning numbers were 8, 18, 27, 29, and 60, while the red ball was 15. The Powerplay multiplier then was at 2x. The estimated pot, on the other hand, was at $80 million with an estimated cash value of $55.2 million after taxes and other deductions.

While no one was able to bring home the top prize, a lucky winner had matched the five white balls to win $1 million. However, the player opted out of the Powerplay option, which would have doubled his or her earnings to $2 million. Said winning ticket was apparently bought from the state of Iowa, according to the Powerball website.

Meanwhile, eight lucky players were able to match four white balls plus the Powerball for $50,000. Of them, three players opted for the Power Play option, which doubled their earnings to $100,000.

More than 1,000 winners were able to match four white balls, or the three white balls plus the golden ball for $100, while almost 20,000 others matched three white balls for $7. Nearly 400,000 players were able to bring home the last two prizes, namely, the $7 and the $4, respectively

How to play the Powerball

Like the Mega Millions, the Powerball is another option for aspiring millionaires. To win, players must submit five numbers from one to 69, and another number from one to 26, to match with the five white balls and the Powerball drawn, respectively. The more matches players make during the lottery date, the higher the prizes - and the higher the odds of winning.

A Powerball ticket costs $1, while the Power Play option, which multiplies non-jackpot earnings by two to ten times, costs an extra $2. According to the Powerball website, the odds of winning the jackpot are one in 292 million, while the odds of winning any prize are one in 24.7.

As such, there are nine ways to win the Powerball. Players win prizes by matching all five white balls and the golden ball for the top prize, to matching the golden ball for $4. Should someone manage to bring home the jackpot, the game will automatically reset itself, and will grow every lottery drawing where no one brings home the grand prize.

The latest lucky winner of the grand prize was from Georgia. The winning ticket was bought on Sept.17, and won him or her more than $246 million.
