Ahead of the marriage, the couple imparted details about their relationship after the announced their engagement in 2012.

"We are both extremely happy and delighted," Madeleine said in a statement released at the time by the royal court.

While Princess Madeleine kept details about the proposal a secret, the royal said that O'Neill popped the question in October 2012 and that he was her "soul mate."

"We met through mutual friends," she said in the statement found on the royal's website. "For me it started with a great friendship. We share the same humor and we have a lot of fun together. Christopher opened up my heart, he is my soul mate."

Princess Madeleine went on to praise O'Neill, who has a dual British-American citizenship.

"I appreciate Chris for his warmth and his humor," the princess gushed ahead of their nuptials. "He has a very big heart and he manages to make everyone in his presence feel good. Christopher is a very thought and generous person."
