PS4 Android App to Hit Smartphones and Tablets Mid-November

The PlayStation 4 Android app will be available on smartphones and tablets in mid-Nov., according to a Sony press release issued earlier this week.

The app will be free and can also be downloaded onto devices running iOS such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch along with many Android based smartphones and tablets. It will be available in the App Store and Google Play.

The new app will allow PS4 players to use their devices as a second screen during game play.

"Users can install PlayStation App on to their mobile devices to use as second screen in supported games," wrote Sony. "For example on The PLAYROOM, a title pre-installed in all PS$ systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game."

Users will also be able to live stream their gameplay to friends who will be able to interact with it using the app.

When users decide to upload or begin streaming their content, their friends' activities will be displayed on the What's New window of the PlayStation App screen. When users tap on this notification, they will have the option boot pre-installed applications, to spectate uploaded gameplay, and comment on gameplay screenshots, footage and live streams.

Users will also be able to purchase game content while away from their console and download it directly to their PS4, PS3 and PS Vita systems.

The app will also turn a mobile device into a remote control that can perform tasks on the PS4 as long as both the system and the handset have access to the same Wi-Fi access point. Users will be able to switch their PS4 to standby mode, start it up, and use their mobile phone as a keyboard with these features.
