Quartet of Presbyterians Net Higher Education Award

LOUISVILLE - Four Presbyterians have been named recipients of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Higher Education Award for 2003.

The four - Carl A. Carpenter of South Carolina, the Rev. Duncan S. Ferguson of Florida, Cynthia H. Tyson of Virginia and the Rev. Darrell W. Yeaney of Iowa - are being honored for making outstanding contributions to the church's higher education ministry.

The annual award will be presented at next month's General Assembly in Denver.

Carpenter, a Presbyterian elder, is a former academic officer at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC, and has been an active member of the Educational Ministry Unit of the Synod of South Atlantic.

Ferguson has served as a college professor, administrator and chaplain. He currently serves as director for the Center of Spiritual Life at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL. He was associate director of higher education for the PC(USA)'s Office of Higher Education for 12 years and served on both the Ireland Task Force and Pakistan Higher Education Initiative.

Tyson has served 18 years as president of Presbyterian-related Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. She recently announced her retirement at the end of the school year. The John Templeton Foundation included Tyson among 50 college and university presidents profiled in its guide to "Colleges that Encourage Character Development."

Yeaney is a retired executive director and campus minister at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He has served as campus minister at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS, and executive director and campus minister at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

The award is sponsored by the denomination's Higher Education Program Area in the National Ministries Division (NMD).

A three-person selection committee met last month to review nominations for the award. Recipients were unanimously approved during a meeting of the NMD Committee on Friday, April 4.

Candidates must be a living Presbyterian or one who has worked on behalf of the PC(USA). They must also be involved in the life of the church and service must be distinguished, extensive and long-term and of national or international significance.
