Queen Elizabeth Cancels Engagement; Continues to Recover

Queen Elizabeth has pulled out of an official engagement on Monday due to symptoms of gastroenteritis that resulted in a recent hospital visit.

Despite the canceled appearance during Commonwealth Day, there is no serious concern about the British monarch's health.

Queen Elizabeth rarely cancels engagements, but was discharged from a hospital one week ago. Although she canceled the daytime event, the 86-year-old royal attended the reception Monday evening, and will uphold other engagements planned for later this week, according to Reuters.

In place of the queen, Elizabeth's 91-year-old husband Prince Philip attended the Commonwealth Day service.

On Monday evening, the monarch appeared in good spirits at the ceremony at Marlborough House in central London, where she gave a brief speech.

Last week's stomach bug also prevented the queen from visiting Italy and required three days of hospital treatment. The hospitalization marked Queen Elizabeth's first in over 10 years.

However, palace officials have assured the media that the queen's current health problems are not serious.

Furthermore, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, also reassured fans that the Queen Elizabeth was in fine condition when reportedly asked about becoming queen.

"You might be waiting a long time," said the Duchess, also known as Kate Middleton, reported the U.K.'s Metro.

Meanwhile, the queen's popularity remains high and has gained momentum as her grandson Prince William is expecting a child with Middleton this summer. The couple, known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, has not revealed the gender of the child.

Queen Elizabeth is only the second British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. Before Elizabeth, only Queen Victoria celebrated 60 years on the throne in 1897.
