"Queen of the South" stars Alice Braga, and depicts the life of Teresa Mendoza, who's forced to go on the run after her drug-dealing boyfriend is murdered in Mexico. But instead of hiding from the cartel that wronged her, she teams up with a member of the ring to take down their leader. The show chronicles her journey upward the drug smuggling empire, and how she solidifies her reign as the narco queen in the South.
The show is based on "La Reina del Sur" ("The Queen of the South"), a successful telenovela on Telemundo. Both series are sourced from Arturo Perez-Reverte's books of the same name.
What went down in Season 1
But more than Teresa, "Queen of the South" is also about the rise of another woman in the narcobusiness: Camila Varga (Veronica Falcon), Teresa's ally in "Queen of the South" Season 1. Fans would recall that during the season finale, the two women were put in dangerous positions by Camila's estranged husband, Epifanio Varga (Joaquim de Almeida). He hasn't completely let go of his cartel power, despite his promises of turning over a new leaf. to his daughter Isabela.
When Epifanio found out Teresa's whereabouts, he immediately had his men seize her and threatened her to relinquish Guero's notebook was or she and Brenda Parra (Justina Machado) were going to suffer a terrible fate. But Camila arrived, revealing that she won Epifanio his governorship, which means she can threaten him with his drug-dealing past.
Meanwhile, Teresa managed to escape, and pulled off her revenge on the man that raped her in the first episode. But she failed to save her best friend Brenda, which completely unravels her. This tragedy calcified her ongoing journey as drug queenpin as she refused to give the notebook to Camila and James.
This is the stage where "Queen of the South" will set its stage on for Season 2. A hardened Teresa out on her own, and Camila and Epifanio out on war. And with Guero still alive and with the DEA, how will this play out for our narco queen?
