Walden Family Theater returns tonight with the premiere of the family film "Pete's Christmas." Most adults will recognize the concept of the film, and children will be delighted by the idea of reliving Christmas over and over again and seeing familiar faces.
Zachary Gordon, star of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," is an overlooked young man who feels neglected. He's tired of being the middle child and things only get worse when his grandfather unexpectedly shows up for the holiday. Gordon tries to make the best of things but nothing turns out the way he wants; as a result, Gordon is given the chance to make things right and relives Christmas Day over and over again.
If the concept sounds familiar, adults may remember the film "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. "Groundhog Day" allows Murray's character to relive the same day and evaluate his life and goals. However, it's not a family-friendly movie, even though it promotes a good message about the quality of life.
"Pete's Christmas" also stars Wesley Morgan, Bruce Dern from "Django Unchained" and Bailee Madison from "Bridge to Terabithia." This is only the latest in a series of films designed to fill in for Friday night quality family entertainment. "Walden Family Media" is a collaboration by Wal-mart, Procter & Gamble and Walden Media, as well as ARC Entertainment.
The film can be seen on Hallmark Channel at 8 p.m. ET. Check local listings for channel line-ups.
Walden Family Theater previously presented titles such as "The Watsons Go to Birmingham"; "Dear Dumb Diary" and "Return to Nim's Island." Walden Media is currently worked on an adaptation of "The Giver," originally written by Lois Lowry. The film will feature Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, and Taylor Swift. It is set to open in theaters on Aug. 15, 2014.
