Rick Perry Being Attacked for His Faith, Says Wife

Mitt Romney is not the only GOP candidate being bashed because of his faith; Rick Perry's wife has also revealed how a lot of the criticism her husband is facing has been due to his religious beliefs.

Anita Perry said on Thursday her husband was being attacked for his faith.

"We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party," Perry said at a speech at North Greenville University in South Carolina where she touched on politics and religion. “So much of that is, I think they look at him, because of his faith."

Perry also said, "It's been a rough month. We have been beaten up and chewed up in the press, to where I need this today."

Rick Perry announced his bid for the GOP nomination in August, and quickly shot up the polls. However, his numbers have recently dropped below Herman Cain and Mitt Romney.

He finished fourth in a poll released by Rasmussen Reports Thursday.

Anita Perry started to tear when she was telling of how her family searched for spiritual guidance just before Perry decided to run.

"God was already speaking to me, but [Rick] didn't want to hear it," she said. "I said listen, you may not see the burning bush, but there are people seeing that burning bush for you. So he really took it to heart, he prayed about it."

Just before Perry announced his plans to run, he told the Des Moines Register that he felt he was being "called" to run for president.

During her speech, Anita Perry told a story in which someone gave her husband a piece of Scripture, as a way of saying, "God is testing you."

Rick Perry was raised a Methodist and attended the same church George W. Bush did during his time as governor. Perry and his family started attending Lake Hill Church during renovation of the Governor's Mansion, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
