"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sam Wopat," said athletic director Bob Bowlsby in a statement, according to ESPN News. "She was an integral member of the Stanford Athletics family and a tremendous student and athlete."

The sophomore student athlete was a former member of the U.S. women's junior volleyball team. Additionally, she was a three-time member of the U.S. junior Olympic teams.

Wopat was surrounded by family, friends and teammates in the intensive care unit until her death, reported the San Francisco Chronicle. The athlete was considered one of the nation's best players. Born in Santa Barbara, Calif., Wopat graduated high school from Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, Calif., where she played varsity volleyball, track and field, and basketball.

The 19-year-old was an outside hitter who averaged 25 sets as a sophomore, but did not play much as a freshman.

In addition to her sister Carly, Wopat leaves behind her parents, Ron and Kathy Wopat, and her younger brothers, Jackson and Eli.
