Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Date News: Company Reveals Unveiling, Looks to Change Smartphone Landscape

Samsung's newest phone, the Galaxy S6, will be unveiled during a media event on March 1 in Barcelona. Last Feb. 2, 2015, Samsung sent out invitations to media to what they called "Samsung Galaxy Unpacked" event.

The media event will be held before the start of the Mobile World Congress slated from March 2 to 5, 2015, also in Barcelona. In 2014, the company also unveiled the Galaxy S5 during an Unpacked event prior to that year's Mobile World Congress.

Based on the image used in the invite, which was also posted on Twitter, the new Samsung Galaxy S6 is rumoured to feature a curved edge, much like what it had on the previously released Galaxy Note Edge.

According to a report by CNN Money, while Samsung remains on top of smartphone sales globally, the company saw a sudden drop in smartphone sales during the last quarter of 2014 resulting in a 27 percent drop in profits during the said period.

The new S6 is expected to be very different in design and form compared to the older models in the Galaxy S Series, which Samsung hopes will help boost sales in the coming year.

The first difference will be in the material. The S6 is said to be made out of metal, and not plastic, as previous models have been criticized for their flimsy, plastic shells. Another major difference is the rumoured change in the processor, according to The Verge. It said that Samsung will make use of its own 14 nanometer (nm) Exynos chip, as opposed to the Snapdragon of Qualcomm, because of overheating issues during testing.

There is also the possible streamlining of the phone's software by making available essential software while other Samsung add-on applications become optional downloads. It also talks about the S6 being available in a variety of colors such as blue-green, dark blue, gold and white but not black.

The curved edge feature may very well be on the new S6 but it is also possible that Samsung will unveil a Galaxy S Edge which will be like the S6 but with a curved edge that also serves as a second screen.
