Samsung Galaxy Nexus Release Date: Where Did the Name 'Galaxy Nexus' Come From?

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has gone by a number of names, including the Samsung Nexus Prime, the Google Nexus Prime, the Samsung Droid Prime and the Google Nexus 3.

However, its name was confirmed as the Galaxy Nexus, at the "Samsung Mobile Unpacked: Google Episode," media event on Oct. 19, where it was unveiled alongside its operating system, Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

The origins of the many pseudonyms for the Galaxy Nexus are unknown, however, sources suggest that Nexus Prime was a code name developers used for the phone in order to conceal Galaxy Nexus as its true name.

A number of commentators have now taken to calling the smartphone Galaxy Nexus (Prime).

The Galaxy Nexus is the next in a long line of similarly named smartphones.

Predecessors and related devices include the Nexus One, the Nexus S, the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S2.

Indications suggest that Galaxy Nexus name is essentially an anagram of the names of phones previously released.

The Nexus S, which released in December 2010 was the first smartphone to run Android 2.3, Gingerbread.

The Galaxy Nexus, which is scheduled to release in November, is the first smartphone to run Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Nexus S, the predecessor of the Galaxy Nexus, is the next Android phone expected to run Ice Cream Sandwich.

Before the unveiling of Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus, an Ice Cream Sandwich powered Nexus S surfaced after a Google employee reportedly sold it on e-Bay.

The Android 4.0 powered Nexus S was the source of many of the Ice Cream Sandwich specs that were leaked.

The Galaxy S2, was released before the Nexus S and has garnered the name "iPhone Killer" due to its impressive specs.

The Galaxy Nexus and its Ice Cream Sandwich OS shared a month of unveiling the Apple's latest smartphone and OS, the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 and could possibly be marketed as the next "iPhone Killer."
