San Diego Chargers vs Washington Redskins is one of six early afternoon starts in Week 9 of the NFL 2013 regular season today. Amazingly even though the Redskins are just 2-5 they have a better chance of winning their division title than the 4-3 San Diego Chargers. The game will start at 1 p.m. ET and can be watched online through free live stream (details below).
Even though the Chargers are a reasonable 4-3, they are in the AFC West where the Kansas City Chiefs are 8-0. As if they wasn't bad enough, they also have the Denver Broncos on 7-1, and the chances of the Chargers overcoming either of those two teams are slim.
In comparison the Redskins are also currently third in the NFC East with a 2-5 record. However, the division has been plagued with inconsistent play, and no team is above .500 at the moment; the Dallas Cowboys are 4-4, Philadelphia Eagles are 3-5, and the New York Giants are the basement team on 2-6. The division is still very much there for the taking if any of the teams can string a good series of wins together. The Redskins will know they have to make their move now, and time is running out for them to establish themselves and make a push for the title.
If they are going to turn the corner, they must sort out their defense though. The Redskins actually have one of the best offenses in the league – ranked 7th in the NFL with 394.4 total yards gained per game. However, they have been let down by some terrible defensive play, and they rank a lowly 29th in the league on that side of the ball.
A record of 2-5 is in stark contrast to the fact that they rank 6th in rush offense (137.3 yards per game), and 10th in pass offense (257.1 yards per game).
The Redskins go through an important period now; after todays' game against the Chargers they will play the troubled Minnesota Vikings, and then the Philadelphia Eagles. They will be hoping for three straight wins in these games, but things must start with a win today against the Chargers.
