'Scandal' News, Plot Spoilers: Cast Member Bellamy Young Talks About A "World of Hurt" for Mellie in Season 5

Shonda Rhimes, the writer and executive producer of ABC's hit political thriller drama TV series "Scandal," teased during the recently-held Television Critics Association press tour that everyone, except Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), will be picking themselves up when Season 5 returns to the small screens.

One of those characters who has been broken yet lucky enough to survive the events of Season 4 is Mellie (Bellamy Young).

Young revealed, in an interview with TV Line's Matt Webb Mitovich, that the upcoming season will start out in a "world of hurt" where Mellie and the other crippled characters "will be seen struggling to emerge from their respective abysses."

"That season finale pulled the rug out from under everyone, so I think everybody was pretty happy that we were starting back immediately after and getting to go into those moments," she told the publication (via TV Line).

Young added that her character in Season 5 will be "less self-indulgent" as she comes to terms with the recent strings of unfortunate events.

"…she's absolutely devastated," she further told TV Line. "She's having to regroup, but she's sort of by herself completely, because everyone is alienated at this point. She's never going to give up without a fight — I mean, shes Mellie! — but a lot of options are no longer open to her."

The publication meanwhile probed the possibility of Mellie simpy going head-to-head with Fitz and Liv and putting a stop to all of her troubles. Young admits it could be an easier option, if not for one thing: Mellie loves Fitz.

"If she didn't love him, that would be the better plan," Young said (via TV Line). "She hates herself for loving him, but she loves him! Oh, her life would be so much simpler if she didn't! But she does."

"Scandal" Season 5 premieres September 24 on ABC.
