'Scandal' Season 6 Release Date, Spoilers & Updates: Mellie Grant Could Win the Presidency; Dangerous Future for Cyrus?

Shonda Rhimes' political thriller television series "Scandal" is currently fielding its presidential candidates for Season 6. Much of Season 6 will zero in on Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) and Frankie Vargas (Ricardo Chavira) vying for the highest position in the world. But as the ABC series begin to resemble much of the actual state of affairs in real life, have we been already tipped off at who will win the presidential elections?

Why Mellie Grant deserves the presidency

In an interview with Bustle, George Newbern (who plays Charlie) and Brian Letscher (Tom Larsen) hinted at the possibility of Mellie Grant winning the elections. Both actors confirmed that Shonda Rhimes and co. are currently working on a "Scandal" Season 6 return that mimics the real-life events of the 2016 elections, comparing Bellamy's Mellie Grant to Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton.

According to Newburn, Mellie could bring several elements to the presidency just like Hillary Clinton. He praised Mellie's sass and put-togetherness, which overall lends her a more accessible, popular vibe among voters. Letscher also put in a good word for Mellie, saying the woman definitely has more experience and has survived more scandals, which now gives her a heavy advantage over the more lightweight Frankie Vargas.

Other character plot points

Meanwhile, Letscher also raised the possibility of Tom raising hell in "Scandal" Season 6. Fans would recall that he got dumped by Cyrus Beene at the end of Season 5 for the vice presidency. He said Tom is bitter and angry, which makes for a dangerous cocktail for the characters in "Scandal."

Speaking of Cyrus, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) might be squaring off with him when "Scandal" Season 6 returns. It may be recalled that Mellie chose to run with Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) as per Olivia's advice, unaware that Cyrus is running for the vice presidency. But Cyrus poses a grave threat for their candidacies in "Scandal" Season 6, especially since Cyrus was the one who made Frankie a household name.

But spoilers revealed that outgoing president Fitz Grant (Tony Goldwyn) might be helping Olivia take Cyrus down to prevent his devious plans from coming into fruition. Bellamy Young had previously revealed in an interview with Variety that Fitz supports Mellie Grant's candidacy "100 percent," and hinted that he might also support Jake's candidacy.

Couple that with Tom's anger, and the future on "Scandal" Season 6 for Cyrus does not bode well. We'll find out soon as "Scandal" returns in the limelight during the fall of 2017.
